Positives
For the first time this year we were able to control the game in all three facets from the kickoff to the final whistle. If any of you were able to attend our game against Hillcrest earlier this year then you may have had a flashback several times during our game Friday night. Like Hillcrest, TCCH was bigger than us and faster than us but they insisted on running an offense that they had to try and bend their talent to fit into and that simply does not work, you have to bend the offense to your talent. Our offense was able to move the ball in the air and on the ground and we controlled the line of scrimmage the entire night. One of the most important things that I look for in every game win or loss is “Were we more physical that our opponent?” Friday night we were MUCH more physical than TCCH and that is something that was missing last year when we played the Tigers. Trinity Christian played in the State finals last year and beating them on Friday was a great feeling for all of our kids. Once again our defense stepped up big and forced the other team to do something that they were not comfortable doing and that was the key to our success. Another bright note was that every boy on our roster played in the game and that does wonders for morale. Given the fact that at crucial times our four backfield positions were occupied by three freshmen and a sophomore speaks very well for the future of this program. I take great comfort in the fact that this team has improved EVERY week this season and as coaches that is all you can ask for and it is everything that you hope for.
Things That Need Work
We had far too many penalties again and if we were to do that in a close ball game it would cost us the game without question. In order to win from here on out we have a VERY simple formula, we MUST: #1 win the turn over battle #2 Rush for 150+ yards #3 Throw for 100+ #4 if we punt we must Punt for a 35+ avg. We do those four things and we have a very real shot at winning a State Championship THIS season. This team was picked by some to finish second to last in our district this year and with a win tomorrow night we can finish 2nd and are 8pts. away from sitting in 1st place!
This Week
This week we head North on Midway to the "megaplex" known as Prestonwood. Prestonwood is well coached, well conditioned and well funded and we will have to play our best game of the year in order to beat them. I have tremendous respect for their coach and know that he will pull out all the stops to win this one……and so will I. For the third week in a row this is a MUST win game for both of us. Prestonwood has a Senior QB and several dangerous weapons on offense as well as a much improved defense. Last week Prestonwood beat Argyle Liberty Christian a feat that we have attempted and failed both of the last two seasons. This is what Texas Friday Night Lights are all about, two good teams meeting in a must win situation with everything on the line. It will be a great game!
